Tide II is the dark moon and the counterpart to the full moon in Tide. This series shows the relationship between presence and absence, not only in the moon cycles but also in the intersections between the negative and positive spaces in the pattern.

In this work, I’ve used a technique called “mokume” shibori. Mokume is a Japanese word meaning “woodgrain”. I began by sketching the shape of the dark moon on the cloth. Then I created the resists by stitching hundreds of tiny running stitches in the cloth. I let the stitches find their own way, like water taking the path of least resistance around the shape. When the pattern was finished, the stitches were pulled up and the fabric gathered in tight folds. The bound bundle was immersed in the indigo vat. This piece was dipped six times.
